The Romans were the first people to create road signs giving distance and direction to places and these were prevalent during the middle ages.
We have come a long way since then and the UK’s highway signs system was introduced on 1st January 1965. However, we have not followed all our fellow Europeans and still use non-metric distance and speed signs.
